Singapore made a good start to the World T20 Asian Qualifiers beating Qatar by 33 runs at the Indian Association Ground in Singapore.
Chasing a massive target, Janak Prakash gave Singapore an early breakthrough. He removed Inam-ul-Haq in the second over to have Qatar at 13 for one. Despite the wicket, Faisal Javed took on the bowlers to secure some quick runs in the powerplays. He took on Vinoth Baskaran and Amjad Mahboob to hit five boundaries and one six before his short-lived innings came to an end. Selladore Vijaykumar got the better of Faisal before Prakash chipped in with one more to have Qatar at 47 for three in the powerplays.
Mohammad Tanveer and Tamoor Sajjad tried to revive the innings with a 44-run stand, but once Singapore broke the partnership, it was all over for Qatar. Mohammed Rizlan made a valiant effort but lacked partners at the other end. Janak Prakash and Amjad Mahboob finished with three each to give Singapore an excellent start to the campaign.
Here is the scoreboard of the Qatar innings:
Batting first, Singapore made use of the home conditions to get off to a flying start. Rohan Rangarajan and Surendra Chandramohan gave the early impetus taking on the Qatar bowlers. They scored at seven runs per over in the powerplays before the visitors got the first breakthrough. Tamoor Sajjad removed the dangerous looking Rangaranjan to have Singapore at 44 for one. But within that, the swashbuckling opener has already provided the tone for the batters to follow with a 20-ball 32 runs knock including three fours and two sixes.
Surendra and Tim David brought back the host on track with a 61-run partnership for the second wicket. Surendra, in particular, looked in sublime touch as he struck five boundaries and two sixes in his 47-run knock before Nouman Sarwar got the better of him. Since then, Qatar staged an excellent comeback banking on Iqbal Hussin keeping the scoreboard under check. He removed set batsmen – Tim David and Manpreet Singh to bring in new batters who failed to get going and eventually managed to post 186 runs on the board in their 20 overs.
