The U.S. women’s national team advanced to the semifinals of the Women’s World Cup after a 2-1 win over France.
American Megan Rapinoe led the way with two goals Friday night. Her scoring put the U.S. in the lead for most of the game, but France gave them a scare late with a goal by Wendie Renard’s header. Still, the U.S. team was able to hold on and avoid a tie, which would have led to extra time. If France would have won, it would have been the first time a nation held both the men’s and women’s trophies.
The U.S. team will now face England, which beat Norway 3-0 on Thursday. The match will be held at noon PDT Tuesday.
