Speculations were rife that Shubman Gill would get a chance in the ODI squad for the upcoming series against West Indies. The highly-rated youngster has been turning heads with his performance since starring in the triumphant Under-19 World Cup campaign in 2018. He scored 372 runs at an average of 124 and bagged the Man of the Tournament award.
It helped him bag a lucrative IPL deal from Kolkata Knight Riders. The youngster totally justified the franchise’s faith scoring 203 runs. He then made it to India A team and continued his impressive show with the bat. Gill had a stunning outing in the last season of the Ranji Trophy. In just 5 games, he scored 729 runs at an average of over 104. The fine run of form helped him earn his maiden India call-up.

He got a chance for the tour of New Zealand when KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya were suspended for the Koffee with Karan fiasco. Gill could not make it to the World Cup squad but was expected to be a part of the team for the West Indies tour. His chances looked only brighter after he scored two fifties for India A in West Indies.
However, he failed to make the cut and chief selector MSK Prasad defended the decision. The former India wicketkeeper made it clear that Gill made his debut only because Rahul was suspended.
“KL Rahul was suspended during New Zealand series so that’s why Shubman gill was given chance in that series. Since KL Rahul is back in the Indian squad, Shubman Gill has to wait. He will be considered in the future,” MSK Prasad told the media after announcing the squads for the West Indies tour.
India, meanwhile, will play three ODIs, three T20Is and a couple of Tests against the West Indies. The tour will get underway next month.
