Jofra Archer, on Thursday, gave a glimpse of just what to expect from him in the coming days. Picked in England’s World Cup squad due to his pace, Archer did not take long to showcase his skills. He starred with the ball, picking up three wickets for just 27 runs to power England to a thumping win over South Africa in the World Cup-opener.
More than Archer’s three wickets, it was his pace that caught everyone’s attention especially the bouncer that made Hashim Amla walk off the field. Amla was struck in the head by a 90mph ball from Archer. The allrounder’s nasty rising delivery caught the Proteas opener into the grille. At first, it looked as though Amla was okay to continue. He also asked for a different hemet before walking off the field after the concussion tests.
New laws allow teams to replace a player who has a concussion or a suspected concussion while tests are carried out. A player who has been struck on the head will undergo a five-minute on-field assessment and, if there are concerns, they will leave the pitch before a liason officer makes a decision on their replacement.
Talking about Archer, the Barbados-born allrounder had warned the batsmen about his pace and what to expect from him way back in 2013. In a tweet that has gone viral, Jofra Archer had asked the players to buy 2 helmets, tweeting:
“All cricketers on my TL buy 2 helmets cuz I ain mekkin no sport dis year”

Meanwhile, Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer starred for the hosts as the Eoin Morgan-led side thrashed the Proteas by 104 runs. South Africa looked more or less clueless in front of Archer’s thunderbolts. Quinton de Kock‘s 68 seemed to have South Africa in the hunt as they were comfortably placed at 129 for 2. However, once Liam Plunkett dismissed de Kock, South Africa lost three wickets for 15 runs. Stokes then took two wickets in two balls to wrap up the innings for 207.
Earlier in the match, England had piled up 311 for 8 thanks to fifties from Jason Roy, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan and Stokes.
