MCC To Review Overthrow Rule After World Cup Final Row

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) is considering to review their overthrow rules in the wake of the ICC World Cup 2019 final between England and Wales at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. The overthrow rule created a lot of stir after Martin Guptill’s throw went to the boundary deflecting of Ben Stokes’ bat which changed the face of the pinnacle clash.

Umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Marais Erasmus gave England six runs instead of five as they failed to notice that Stokes and his partner Adil Rashid didn’t cross over when Guptill was making the throw. Meanwhile, England needed nine runs from the last three balls before that, and the six overthrows brought the equation down to three needed off two. The game went on to end in a tie, and the Super Over also couldn’t separate both the sides. Eventually, England lifted their maiden World Cup at home by virtue of Super Over boundary count which also raised a lot of speculations.

Soon after the overthrow, England batsman Ben Stokes raised his hands in apology. Later, Stokes teammate James Anderson revealed that Stokes had asked the umpire to take away the four overthrow runs awarded to them. Meanwhile, it is a general courtesy that when a ball gets deflected from a batsman’s bat, the batters don’t take any extra run. The overthrow rule attracted a lot of criticisms after the game from the fans and former cricketers.

As a result, MCC, the custodians of cricket laws, have decided to review the rule when they meet next to look for changes in the regulations as per reports in the Times. Former umpire Simon Taufel also slammed the umpires for their massive mistake in the all-important clash.

“There is a feeling at MCC that overthrows are worth looking at when it next reviews the laws of the game, which is the responsibility of the MCC Laws sub-committee,” Times reported.
