SAN RAFAEL — A driver was killed and his passenger seriously injured when the SUV they were in drifted off the road and overturned early Sunday morning.
The male driver and female passenger were heading north in a Ford Expedition on Highway 101 near Lucas Valley Road in San Rafael at around 3:40 a.m., CHP officers said. They drifted to the right, left the highway and veered up an embankment, according to CHP. The car knocked over a light pole on the right shoulder before coming to a rest on its side in the slow lane. When officers arrived, they found the Expedition lying on the driver’s side, blocking traffic.
The female passenger was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. The male driver died at the scene.
Neither the driver nor the passenger appears to have been wearing a seatbelt, and both were ejected during the crash, according to CHP. It is not yet known whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
CHP had not released the names of the victims Sunday afternoon, as officers attempted to locate their family.
The CHP, Marin County Sheriff’s Office and San Rafael Fire Department responded to the scene.
