Windies Cricket Team have started their ICC World Cup campaign with a scintillating win over Pakistan at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. The bowlers led by Oshane Thomas skittled Pakistan for 105 runs before Chris Gayle’s fifty helped them chase down the target. Getting off to a scintillating start, Windies skipper Jason Holder said that they will play a fearless brand of cricket and will look to make fans happy back at home.
Great to start with a win: Holder
Jason Holder won the toss and asked Pakistan to bat first before Andre Russell wreck havoc with the new ball. He removed Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam to provide the early impetus before Oshane Thomas, and the skipper himself joined the party. Thomas picked four wickets while Holder returned with three to bowl out Pakistan for 105 runs. Chris Gayle started the chase in a flier despite losing Shai Hope and Dwayne Bravo to Mohammad Amir from the other end. Gayle soon reached to his fifty before getting out as Nicholas Pooran took over the mantle to set up a convincing win.
Speaking at the end of the game, Jason Holder seemed happy to get off to a good start. The Windies skipper hailed Andre Russell calling him an impact who gives his best in all the games alongside Oshane Thomas. He also credited the whole team for sticking to the plans which came out good for the team.
“Got off to a really good start. Got wickets with the new ball which is what we ask of the guys. Russell is an impact player. Really good to see the impact he had today, followed by Oshane Thomas. Sheldon (Cottrell) started really well for us. Credit to the boys who stuck to the task,” Holder said.
Furthermore, Jason Holder credited Chris Gayle for setting up the chase very well. He also added that they have no expectations and just want to enjoy their game and play a fearless brand of cricket. The Windies management are not looking too far in the tournament and wants to take one match at a time.
“Chris started us off tremendously. He eases the pressure in a chase like this. He imposed himself and kept them at bay. Wanted to start with a win. Been a long build-up to the tournament. Been anxiously waiting for this first game. Good to get it out of the way. Don’t want to get too far ahead. As I said in the press conference, I have no expectations, just want to come out and enjoy our cricket. Play fearless cricket and make the people back home proud,” he concluded.
