England produced an overall cricket at Edgbaston to beat India by 31 runs in a must-win match in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019. The hosts took on the Indian spinners and unsettled them right from the start of the game. England skipper Eoin Morgan who breathed a sigh of relief after two consecutive loss said that it was great to see Indian spinners being taken on.
Winning the toss was important: Morgan
Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow took the attack to the opposition when Virat Kohli introduced Yuzvendra Chahal in the powerplays. There was no respite for Kuldeep Yadav as well as they both conceded 160 runs from 20 over picking the only wicket of Roy. In the process, Chahal who shelled out 88 runs from his ten overs became the most expensive Indian bowler in the history of World Cup. Ben Stokes also took on them as both of them had a rare off-day in business on a flat Edgbaston wicket.
Speaking at the end of the game, Eoin Morgan said it was a great sight that Indian spinners were going for runs. He also added the opening partnership between Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow helped them march to a massive total.
“Winning the toss and batting was an easy decision and it ended up working out. Jason Roy coming back in, Jonny going on and getting a hundred that was magnificent. The continuation of partnerships throughout took us to a good total. They are huge threats, the two main spinners for India, but them being taken on was great to see,” Morgan said.
Furthermore, Eoin Morgan also heaped praise on Liam Plunkett, whose wickets in the middle overs kept England in the game. The veteran all-rounder bagged the crucial wickets of Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, and Rishabh Pant, which changed the course of the game.
“Liam (Plunkett) has been outstanding for us the last four years. Particularly in that middle period, where it’s difficult to take wickets,” he added.
In conclusion, Eoin Morgan stated all the game are challenging in a tournament like the World Cup, and they will have to work hard and try and win the matches. England face New Zealand in the must-win games for both the side for a place in the semifinal.
