Epic Bay Area sunset: 15 great Instagram shots of Thursday night’s colors

The last straggling commuters heading home Thursday were treated to a Bay Area sunset of epic proportion. There was, of course, no official announcement of its pending arrival. Those inside their homes missed it completely. But the way the lingering sunlight practically exploded behind the coastal mountains, and then smoothly shellacked the East Bay hills with a wash of peach and gold, was the sort of sundown that would take the gold medal at Mother Nature’s county fair.

As the western skies shimmered in the afterglow, the San Francisco Bay’s waters, its bridges and the hillsides from Berkeley to Hayward and beyond became a living gallery of golden images. The scrublands of Castro Valley and Fremont glowed bright orange. The metal railings on the Bay Bridge shined with an inner glow. And kitchen windows in the Oakland hills took turns reflecting the dying sunlight across the bay, each burning bright like a lantern.

As expected, social media noticed.
